Spiritual Friend

So often in our lives we create a “spiritual switch”. As if there were times when it should be off or on. We flip it on for our “church life” or during what we consider evangelism, and then shut it off for most of our day to day activities – work, school, play. Hence, spirituality becomes a series of events, while much of our daily walk is spent void of it. This dilemma begs these questions – Is this form of spirituality healthy? Is it touching the lives of those who most need it? Is this the type of life which Jesus walked?

Jesus modeled something beyond this compartmentalized spirituality. He walked as a spiritual friend. His life was his evangelism. He invited others into his daily walk to experience the whole life, not just the physical or the spiritual. He ate with sinners, he healed the sick, he went to parties, and he taught about the kingdom of God on road trips. Even his parables fused daily life and great spiritual truths.

Jesus, the very son of God, was TOUCHABLE and spiritually accessible! There was no flipping of the switch. He walked in both seamlessly. Read the gospels with fresh eyes today. Did he separate his daily from his spiritual? How did he interact with everyday people? Was he just a preacher standing on a soapbox? Or was he a loving friend, a light, and a healer, even to the friendless, unclean, and unspiritual?

Jesus invites us to walk as he did and gives us the same Spirit so as to be able to do so. Even now he calls us to walk daily with him – in both the stillness and the chaos, the sacred and the daily. How can we be spiritual friends as Jesus was, and is, in our daily walk today?
